Archbishop Gomez celebrates annual Cesar Chavez mass with farm workers, Chavez family
Day before 25th anniversary of iconic civil rights leader’s passing
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez celebrates the annual Cesar Chavez Memorial Mass on Sunday at Downtown Los Angeles’ Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels before an audience that includes farm workers; United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez; Paul F. Chavez, president of the Cesar Chavez Foundation; Chavez granddaughter Julie Chavez Rodriguez; and other members of the Chavez family.
The mass falls on the day before the 25th anniversary of the death of the civil rights and farm labor leader who passed away on April 23, 1993. It also comes 50 years after the Chavez ended his 25-day water-only fast to rededicate the farm worker movement to nonviolence on March 10, 1968.
Speaking following the mass will be the UFW’s Arturo Rodriguez and Julie Chavez Rodriguez, state director for U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris.
