UFW calls for boycott of Windmill Mushrooms

Sunnyside, WA – On Dec 18 and 19 current and former workers from the Windmill Mushroom Farm in Sunnyside, WA rallied both in Sunnyside and in Seattle to formally announce a UFW boycott of Windmill label mushrooms.

“For over 2 years, workers at a mushroom facility in Sunnyside, WA, now owned by Windmill Mushroom Farm, have been fighting for union recognition,” said UFW President Teresa Romero. “Under Washington State Law, agricultural workers are excluded from the right to organize and there is no legal mechanism to force companies to recognize labor unions regardless of the wishes of a majority of the workforce. Many pro-union workers at Windmill Mushrooms have faced adverse actions, including terminations and conditions that have pressured them to leave their jobs. As such, after repeated demonstrations, petitions, and other demands for union recognition, the United Farm Workers is announcing its first official boycott of the decade against Windmill Mushrooms, until the company agrees to recognize the union.”

The Windmill Mushroom label can be found at many grocery stores across the Pacific Northwest and has been identified by UFW activists at locations in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Additionally, Windmill also produces mushrooms for sale under generic store labels, which may not be easily identifiable as from Windmill. Any mushroom labeled as being from Sunnyside, Washington will be one produced by Windmill Farms Mushroom, as it is the only mushroom plant in the area. Don’t buy Windmill Mushrooms from Sunnyside, Washington!
