Tour part of the national resist Trump effort
Bakersfield, CA – United Farm Workers and UFW Foundation activists join immigrant rights and labor groups plus community members on three stops of a statewide tour for “Caravan Against Fear/Caravana Contra El Miedo” today, Wednesday, April 12, before it travels on to San Diego and Texas. The caravan’s Central Valley stops highlight farm worker families deeply impacted by Donald Trump’s new immigration policies and practices.
Today’s activities begins at 10 a.m. at the at the Fresno County Sheriff’s office. A rally targets Sheriff Margaret Mims, who is cooperating with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to detain and deport undocumented immigrants in Fresno County.
Later today the caravan rolls into Bakersfield for a 5:30 p.m. protest at the Kern County Sherriff Department’s office. Bakersfield community members will stage a street theater performance aimed at Sheriff Donny Youngblood, who also is cooperating with ICE to detain and deport undocumented immigrant in Kern County.
Caravan Against Fear is a grassroots statewide consists of a journey from Sacramento to the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego. Its goals are defending immigrant rights, keeping families together and resisting the anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration.
On Thursday, April 13, immigrant rights activists from the caravan tour will stop from 1-3 p.m. to visit the National Chavez Center/Cesar E. Chavez National Monument. Cesar Chavez Foundation President Paul Chavez will be joining the group during the tour.
Other groups and organizations participating in the caravan include Mi Familia Vota, the Fresno-Madera-Tulare-Kings Central Labor Council, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Faith In the Valley, ICE Out Of Fresno Coalition,National Day Labor Organizing Network, Service Employees International Union, Border Network for Human Rights, Southern Border Communities Coalition, Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance, Rompeviento Television, Global Exchange plus dozens of other allies in both the U.S. and Mexico.
