Portland ceremony honors Cesar Chavez

A celebration in downtown Portland to honor Latino labor leader Cesar Chavez started in song Thursday morning.

The Maine league of United Latin American Citizens held this ceremony to celebrate Chavez’s birthday. LULAC members and even his doctor spoke about the leadership Chavez brought to organized workers in this state and across the country.

Chavez’s name made headlines earlier this month when governor LePage removed it from a meeting room at the department of labor.

At the event, the Maine state director vowed to keep Chavez’s memory alive. LULAC leaders invited the governor to the ceremony, but he was not in attendance.
