Madera, Calif.—Farm workers are marching in Madera on Sunday to honor Cesar Chavez on International Workers’ Memorial Day and to commemorate the men and women who have lost their lives or were injured on the job. The march comes nearly 11 years after the death of María Isavel Vásquez Jiménez, a pregnant 17-year old farm worker from Oaxaca, Mexico who died from heat exhaustion after laboring more than nine hours without proper access to shade or water.
April 23 marked the 26th anniversary of Chavez’s passing. And marchers are also supporting the “Blue Card” bill by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein letting immigrant farm workers earn permanent legal status by continuing to work in agriculture.
United Farm Workers Secretary-Treasurer Armando Elenes will help lead the Madera march. The UFW and the UFW Foundation are both sponsoring the event and continue working to ensure safe and healthful workplaces for all workers.
