Farm workers mourn the passing of actor and activist Ed Asner, who championed Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers since the 1970s. Asner “served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985 and was active in political causes both within and beyond the entertainment industry,” the New York Times reported. “The issues he supported over the years included unionism…and animal rights.”
UFW veterans recall Asner actively supporting farm worker boycott and political campaigns and helping raise money for the union since at least the ’70s. In later years he spoke fondly about how much the UFW and Cesar, also an animal rights supporter, meant to him. For more, see https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/29/arts/television/ed-asner-dead.html
