Farm Workers on Parliamentarian’s Opinion on Immigration: “We Are Not Done Yet. The Senate Must Pass Immigration Reform”

UFW Foundation, UFW determined to pass immigration reform despite bad advice from Senate staff

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Parliamentarian, an unelected staff member in the Senate, has recommended not including immigration provisions in the Build Back Better Bill. The Senate still has the power to pass immigration reform.

“For many of us working the fields, protection from deportation and travel permits are a way for us and our families to feel safe and secure in our own communities,” said UFW union member and UFW Foundation farm worker leader from Ventura County, Guillermo Garcia. “To say we are disappointed in the parliamentarian’s recommendation is true, but what’s most important is that we are not done yet. The Senate must pass immigration reform. We are relentless. We are resilient. And we will fight until we win.”

“Despite this bad advice from the unelected Senate Parliamentarian, we remain determined and undeterred,” said UFW Foundation Executive Director Diana Tellefson Torres. “We will win immigration relief for the workers who feed us and the millions of undocumented immigrants who are integral members of our communities.”

“We are used to uphill battles,” said United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero. “We are angry and we will keep fighting. We will not be discouraged. Si se puede.”
