This Day in UFW History – August 22, 1966: This day saw the merger of the mostly Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and the largely Latino National Farm Workers Association to form the United Farm Workers and cement a historic multi-ethnic labor and civil rights struggle. AWOC members began the Delano Grape Strike in September 1965, and asked the NFWA to join their picket lines. Cesar Chavez became director of the UFW and Larry Itliong became associate director.
