César Chávez march is Tuesday
A peace march honoring civil rights activist César Chávez will take place Tuesday evening in Yakima.
The event begins with a candlelight vigil at 5:30 p.m. at Millennium Plaza, 24 S. Third St., followed by a blessing and speeches by local activists and leaders, including Alex Santillanes of Barrios Unidos and Yakima City Councilwoman Sonia Rodriguez.
Chávez, who died in 1993, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. Tuesday would have been his 82nd birthday.
After a presentation by Los Bailadores de Casa Hogar, the march begins around 6:50 p.m. It will be followed by presentations on unity and peace, Chávez’s biography and Washington’s farm worker movement.
United Farm Workers, Barrios Unidos, Yakima Valley Committee, Amigas Unidas, Radio KDNA, Casa Hogar, and the Parent Leadership of Yakima Valley are sponsors.
