Watch Parties in ten West Coast cities at 4:30 p.m. PT Thursday
UFW, UFW Foundation farm workers to watch & celebrate President Obama’s speech for administrative relief
Announcing executive action on behalf of millions of immigrants, including
at least 250,000 farm workers (and at least 125,000 California farm workers)
After more than a decade of leading the battle for immigration reform, the United Farm Workers of America and the UFW Foundation are organizing watch parties at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in ten West Coast cities to view President Obama’s Thursday broadcast announcing executive action granting hard-working farm worker families the chance to live, work and stay in the country they’ve called home for years. (The President’s address will be carried on English-language cable stations and the Univision and Telemundo Spanish-language networks at 8 p.m. Eastern time (5 p.m. Pacific time).)
UFW President Arturo Rodriguez met with President Obama Wednesday at the White House. Based on the requirements the President shared, the UFW conservatively estimates that at least 250,000 farm workers—and at least 125,000 California farm workers—will be eligible for deportation relief under the executive action to be unveiled today. “The President committed to working with UFW to do everything possible to make sure that every farm worker who qualifies for the program gets enrolled, and we are prepared to work with him and Congress to finish the job by passing legislation that fully addresses this issue once and for all,” Rodriguez said.
Through a myriad of marches, demonstrations, lobbying and meetings with President Obama, the UFW has been actively involved in pushing for comprehensive immigration reform through its “Con La Union de Campesinos Tendremos Papeles” (With the United Farm Workers, we will get our papers) nationwide campaign over the past decade. In fall 2014, the UFW launched its "Ya Mero!" campaign to inform and motivate farm workers that "We’re Almost There" in achieving immigration reform.
All these efforts culminate in watch parties taking place across California and the Pacific Northwest. UFW Foundation will also host information sessions for immigrants starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, and lasting through the weekend. For more information on these sessions call 877-881-8281.
