The series also will feature poet Paul Flores, known for his spoken-word performances.

The event connects with one of the university’s key missions: reaching out to underrepresented students in the community, said Julia Balén, faculty director of the Center for Multicultural Engagement.

"One of César Chávez’s things was to lift yourself up, then lift others up," Balén said. "We see his message as very much tied to our mission."

Huerta will speak about community activism Tuesday night at the Camarillo campus.

The event also will include performances by Inlakech Ballet Folklorico and local artist Manuel Unzueta.

Huerta will speak at 7 p.m. at Malibu Hall 100. Parking is free in lots A10 and SH2.

A list of other events and speakers follows. All events are on campus unless otherwise noted.

• Tuesday: "Sacrifice, Opportunity and Hope," a panel discussion exploring Chávez’s work with the United Farm Workers. Panelists will be Frank Barajas, associate professor of history; Barbara Macri-Ortiz, an Oxnard lawyer and activist; and Lupe Anguiano, a community activist. 10:30 a.m. to noon, Malibu Hall 100.

"This brings in people in Ventura County who worked directly with César Chávez in the United Farm Workers movement," Barajas said. "They will give personal accounts."

• Wednesday: "Voice of a Generation." Poet Paul Flores will read his poetry at Cafe on A in Oxnard. 7 to 9 p.m. The cafe is at 438 South A St.

• April 3: Spoken-word performance workshop, a class for people who want to learn more about performance poetry and hip hop activism. Led by Flores. 5 to 6:30 p.m., The Hub.

• April 3: "Rhyme for a Reason: Social Justice Poetry Slam," an open mic night with music and poetry. Flores will be master of ceremonies. 7 to 9 p.m., The Hub.
