United Farm Workers to honor the winners of the ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship Program in Salinas at special awards ceremony
The ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship Program honors the children of farm worker families for their academic success and dedication to community service; several award ceremonies will be celebrated throughout California
Salinas, CA – Today at a special awards ceremony, the United Farm Workers will proudly present four scholarships to the children of UFW members who work in the central coast.
A total of seven scholarships have been granted this year at different regions in California as part of the ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship Program, established at the request of UFW members to support students that have demonstrated a commitment to completing their education in spite of any financial hardships.
This scholarship program is intended to help students reach their educational goals and can be applied towards any education-related costs, including textbooks, lab fees, uniforms, and any other fees associated with their studies. The ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarships have been made possible by a generous commitment from the United Farm Workers membership to allocate funds for a scholarship program. The program has already helped 37 students from 2010 to 2012 to further their education. The students, all from farm worker families, represent thousands of hard working farm workers throughout California and the Pacific Northwest.
The scholarship recipients that will be receiving their awards in Salinas are:
· Michelle Andrade, daughter of Juan Andrade, a farm worker at J&L Farms
· Andrea Carrasco, daughter of Arturo Carrasco-Botello, a farm worker at Monterey Mushroom Farms
· Ilce Rodriguez, daughter of Columba Avila, a farm worker at Monterey Mushrooms
· Stephanie Chavez, daughter of Aida Solorio, a farm worker at Monterey Mushrooms
