UFW sister organization participates in National Voter Registration Day in Kern and Tulare county rural areas
A sister organization of the United Farm Workers and UFW Foundation, the Civic Empowerment Coalition (CEC4), will participate in National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 27 across Kern and Tulare Counties.
Hundreds of farm workers are becoming new U.S. citizens and will be voting in on Nov. 8. Six million Americans didn’t vote in 2008 because they missed their state’s deadline to register. Hundreds of events are being planned across the nation as part of this year’s National Voter Registration Day.
Since August, the Civic Empowerment Coalition, a non-profit 501 (C)(4) community organization, has been undertaking non-partisan voter registration efforts in the rural areas of Kern and Tulare counties. The group has a core team of organizers trained in non-partisan voter registration as well as the electoral process and community outreach.
“This is a crucial election, said UFW President and Board Member of CEC4 Arturo S. Rodriguez. “The farm movement through the extensive work of the Civic Empowerment Coalition will demonstrate our community is committed to stop hate against our families with our vote. It has already registered voters in 15 cities and will continue to do so until Oct. 24."
Its voter registration efforts increasingly recognize the importance of engaging youth and encouraging them to make their voices heard. In order to register, students need to be age 18 or will turn 18 on or before Election Day, Nov. 8.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 24.
