UFW’s Arturo Rodriguez joins President Obama for Labor Day rally in Boston
With other national labor leaders on Monday, Sept. 7
Boston, Mass.—United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez will join President Obama by celebrating Labor Day with a union rally on the Boston Common at 12 noon on Monday, Sept. 7. Also at the event will be national labor leaders and Massachusetts’ two U.S. Senators, Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.
The UFW most recently worked closely with the White House and Rodriguez personally met with President Obama over his November 2014 executive order protecting from deportation five million undocumented immigrants, including hundreds of thousands of U.S. farm workers. The UFW is currently encouraging the Obama administration to help end decades of discrimination against farm workers by guaranteeing them the same protections as other workers through a new national Agricultural Worker Protection standard on pesticides.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 10,000 to 20,000 physician-diagnosed pesticide poisonings occur each year among the approximately 2 million U.S. agricultural workers.
