UFW announces campaign to mobilize farm workers, supporters to push for Senate immigration legislation

Keene, CA – On Wednesday, June 12, the United Farm Workers (UFW) and sister organizations, UFW Foundation and Campesina Radio Network, along with local partners, will be announcing plans to mobilize thousands of farm workers and supporters within the next three weeks in support of the bipartisan Senate immigration reform bill. The UFW will be making the announcement at press conferences in Salinas, Bakersfield and Fresno in California and Hermiston in Oregon.

The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) was introduced by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).  The proposal calls for a roadmap to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the country and includes special agricultural provisions, negotiated by the United Farm Workers, major grower associations, and Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Rubio and Bennet.

The U.S. Senate floor started debating the immigration reform bill this week, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) expects to have a vote on the final passage of the bill before the July 4 recess.
