UFW, UFW Foundation Hosts Cesar Chavez Movie Screenings
Sacramento Calif.- The United Farm Workers of America and UFW Foundation in partnership with The California Endowment will be hosting screenings of the movie “Cesar Chavez,” which depicts the life of the civil-rights activist and labor organizer Cesar Chavez. The screenings are to raise awareness about the historic struggles of farm workers, and the ongoing plight of undocumented Californians—many of whom work in the Central Valley and lack access to basic health care.
The screenings are part of The Endowment’s “Health4All” campaign that seeks to call attention to the lack of affordable health coverage for undocumented Californians. Though the governor has made a commitment to invest money to implement Medi-Cal, more than one million undocumented residents continue to be shut out of access to affordable, quality health care.
Currently, Californians without legal status are not eligible for Medi-Cal and cannot purchase health insurance through the state’s online exchange, Covered California. Investing in a health care system that’s inclusive of all Californians, regardless of their immigration status, will protect them from additional financial hardship, help make California healthier and saves taxpayers money.

About the United Farm Workers of America (UFW)
Founded in 1962 by Cesar Chavez, the United Farm Workers of America is the nation’s first successful and largest farm workers union currently active in 10 states. The UFW continues to organize in major agricultural industries across the nation. The UFW has been actively involved in pushing for comprehensive immigration reform through its ‘Con La Union de Campesinos Tendremos Papeles’ (With the United Farm Workers, we will get our papers) nationwide campaign for the past decade. Last year, the UFW and major grower associations negotiated the special agricultural provisions which were included in the Senate’s immigration reform bill passed in June. The provisions would allow farm workers legalize their status by continuing to work in agriculture. To learn more about the UFW, please visit: www.ufw.org.
About the UFW Foundation
Founded in 2006 as a 501c3 with headquarters in Los Angeles, the UFWF opened service centers two years later in Salinas and Bakersfield in order to reach and better serve low-income farm workers and other immigrants living in more remote, underserved communities in central and northern California. In the past year, the UFWF’s service centers have served over 1000 immigrants and their families. The centers fill a gap in the service network by providing critically-needed assistance to those who live in areas where resources are few or non-existent. Of particular importance is the legal assistance the UFWF offers through its staff who are accredited by the federal Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) to provide immigration advice.
About The California Endowment
The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation, was established in 1996 to expand access to, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental affordable improvements in the health status of all Californians. Headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, The Endowment has regional offices in Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno and San Diego, with program staff working throughout the state. The Endowment challenges the conventional wisdom that medical settings and individual choices are solely responsible for people’s health. Through its ‘Health Happens Here’ campaign and ten-year initiative for Building Healthy Communities, The Endowment is creating places where children are healthy, safe and ready to learn. At its core, The Endowment believes that health happens in neighborhoods, schools, and with prevention. For more information, visit The California Endowment’s homepage at www.calendow.org.
