UFW Foundation responds to the impact of the Latino vote on election results and the future of Immigration Reform and the Deferred Action program

SALINAS, CA – On Wednesday, October 7, 2012 farm workers, students, and community members along with the United Farm Workers Foundation (UFW Foundation) will come together in a press conference to react to the impact of the Latino vote on election results and announce what this means for the future of Immigration Reform and the Deferred Action program for undocumented youth.

Latinos want humane immigration policies and to ensure that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program stays in place. It has been almost 5 months since the DACA application start date came into effect and opened the door for young undocumented immigrants to access work permits. Since that time, the UFW Foundation has been working tirelessly to both inform the community about the new program as well as to assist in the application process. The hard working families that attend these events have demonstrated the huge need for humane immigration reform as siblings and parents who may not qualify under DACA still live in fear of deportation.

To date, the UFW Foundation has assisted hundreds of individuals with their applications in California and Arizona. Though there have been a large number of applications across the nation it has been speculated that the majority of those that qualify for DACA have been waiting for the presidential election results before deciding to apply.

Under DACA, people younger than 31 who arrived in the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, are in school, completed school or served in the military, can apply for work permits.  Participants must also prove that they have been living in the country continuously for at least five years.

The UFW Foundation is a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) recognized organization that offers immigration legal services to low-income families in California and Arizona.  The organization also advocates for humane immigration policies at the national level.
