Cesar Chavez’s Legacy Lasts
UFW Continues Labor Leader’s Mission
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The 80th birthday of Cesar Chavez is being remembered all across California Friday.
The labor leader died more than a decade ago but his legacy continues on with the organization he helped create. The United Farm Workers or UFW is still active in agricultural communities throughout the United States.
The UFW began in the early 1960s under the leadership of Chavez. He galvanized Latino farm workers into fighting for better wages and working conditions. As a pacifist Chavez choose nonviolent methods like marching, fasting, and boycotting growers to get his message out.
