Thousands walk to honor Cesar Chavez legacy on 8th anniversary of his death during 3rd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Walk
LOS ANGELES-Thousands will join the 3rd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Walk in East Los Angeles on Saturday, April 21-the weekend marking the eighth anniversary of Chavez’ death-to spread awareness among young people about the legendary farm labor leader’s messages on social justice, non-violence and self-sacrifice.
The Los Angeles Walk concludes a month of activities which began on Chavez’s March 31 birthday-celebrated this year for the first time as a formal state holiday with hundreds of events across California-and ending with the anniversary of his passing on April 23.
Thousands of people will assemble at the East Los Angeles College Stadium to kick off the April 21 walk. They include Chavez’s widow, Helen, and other Chavez family members, Hollywood figures such as Mauricio Mendoza and Ruth Livier (“Resurrection Blvd.”), Esai Morales, (“NYPD Blue”) and comedian George Lopez, host of MEGA 92.3 Morning show, and many elected officials. After a brief welcome, participants will walk a five-kilometer route through an East L.A. neighborhood before returning for a free concert by Grammy-winning musician "Little Joe y La Familia" as well as comedy by MEGA 92.3’s George Lopez in a picnic-like setting on the grassy field surrounding the stage.
Sponsors supporting the 3rd Annual Cesar Chavez Walk include ABC7, KMEX, Vons, The Walt Disney Co., La Opinion, MEGA 92.3, Super Estrella, Coca Cola Co., Moneygram, The Gas Co., Union Bank, IATSE Local 33, Diamond and McCormick.
