Thousands gather to honor Cesar Chavez in San Francisco on his birthday
As Californians’ celebrate the first official observance of Cesar Chavez’ March 31 birthday as a state holiday, thousands of Bay area residents will gather to honor the legendary United Farm Worker’s founder’s life in the Cesar E. Chavez Holiday Parade.
Thousands are expected to assemble at Justin Herman Plaza to kick off the March 31 event. Participants will parade down Market Street to The Civic Center Plaza where a program and festival will begin. Mayor Willie Brown will be the Grand Marshall. Among the participants will be UFW President Arturo Rodriguez.
Sponsors of the Cesar E. Chavez Holiday Parade include Safeway Food and Drugs, Bay Area Rapid Transit, KTVU Fox 2, KDTV Ch. 14, KSOL, California Teachers Association, El Mensajero, California State Employees Association, San Francisco Special Events, Brooke Oliver and Associates and Keiser Permanente.
Festival entertainment features country singer Joe McDonald, music by Many Faces, mariachi bands, rap artists, Aztec & Folkloric Dancers, and comedy by Wavy Gravy as well as arts and crafts, games and information booths.

10 a.m. – Invocation.
11 a.m. – Assemble for Parade at Justin Herman Plaza, foot of Market St. near
Embarcadero BART/MUNI station.
12 noon – Parade down Market St.
1 p.m. – 5 p.m. – Program and festival at Civic Center Plaza.
