Farm workers will use their lunch break on June 25 and later days to post photos from the field to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to show support of the Senate immigration reform bill.

Organized by the United Farm Workers and the United Farm Workers Foundation, the “Photos from the Fields Campaign” feature farm workers using hashtag #FieldFotos for the campaign, according to Maria Machuca, communications director for the United Farm Workers.

The Senate is expected to vote on S. 744 for final passage on June 27 or June 28, she said. The agricultural provisions in the legislation are good for both growers and farm workers, she said, and are the result of negotiations between UFW, grower organizations and Senators Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Michael Bennet, D-Colo.

Many farm workers are starting to join social media sites, Machuca said.

“We wanted to invite all farm workers to send pictures to social media (sites) to encourage lawmakers to pass the immigration reform bill currently being debated in the Senate,” she said.

She said it may be difficult for harvest crews to upload photos during their workday, because many work in remote fields where cell phone reception is poor.
