The Hill: Union: Obama broke promise on immigration

Union: Obama broke promise on immigration

The United Farm Workers said President Obama broke his promise when announcing his decision to delay action on immigration on Saturday.

"Instead of doing what’s right for the economy, farm workers and the country, he broke his promise to the millions of immigrants and Latinos who are looking for him to lead on this issue in the wake of Republicans’s dysfunction and obstruction," said president of the union, Arturo Rodriguez.

"Justice delayed is justice denied," Rodriguez added.

The White House said the move to postpone executive action until after the November elections would help achieve comprehensive reform in the long run.

Obama also didn’t want to politicize the issue any further during the election cycle.

The union remained optimistic, however, that victory on immigration reform is a "matter of when, not if."

Other activist groups were quick to blast Obama on his decision, calling it "betrayal" and "bitterly disappointing."
