Cesar Chavez Day in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The 12th annual Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Breakfast attracted a sell-out crowd to the San Diego Convention Center Monday.

About 1,200 tickets were sold to the event honoring the late civil rights leader, compared to around 1,000 last year, said Carlos Delgado, who helped organize the event.

The keynote speaker was Alex Montoya, the manager of Latino relations for the San Diego Padres, who shared stories about being a triple-amputee.

San Diego 6 News feature reporter Ruben Galvan served as emcee for the event.

Also Monday, a post office in Logan Heights was renamed for Chavez, who helped organize Latino farm workers.

The actual day of Cesar Chavez’ birthday is Wednesday, when administrative offices for the county of San Diego, city of San Diego and city of Chula Vista will be closed. State offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and superior courts, will be closed.

Many recreational facilities will remain open.
