Los Angeles County will be honoring the life and work of Cesar Chavez with County employee volunteer activities the week of March 24. County employees will volunteer in the community at non-profit organizations, and will help with special projects. Activities will include delivering meals to seniors, assembling care packages for troops and wounded soldiers, reading and interacting with preschool age children, landscaping and general park maintenance, providing presentation on interviewing skills to post 9-11 veterans, and many more. There will also be a food drive conducted in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Following Cesar Chavez’s example of “Service to Others”, the County’s annual Cesar Chavez Community Service Week was established in 2002 to celebrate the legacy of this American hero by offering County employees an opportunity to give back by helping with community projects and other activities instead of taking a Cesar Chavez Holiday. The legacy of Cesar Chavez is also being showcased through educational materials that trace his life’s work within the California labor movement to his distinction as one of the world’s most respected civil rights advocates. |
