PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Activist and civil rights leader César E. Chávez was remembered during the eighth annual César E. Chávez Birthday Celebration Breakfast on Thursday at the Mosaic Latin American Bistro.

"César Chávez is best known for his work with the farm workers’ unions, but it is his great legacy as a leader, civil servant and very humble individual that we wish to celebrate," said Marta V. Martínez, event coordinator.

The Chávez Scholarship Fund awarded the Tam Tran Scholarship to two students entering schools of higher education this fall. Speakers were to include Betsy Caraballo, of the New England Farm Workers Council, and Central Falls High School student José Contreras.
