Academic and Union perspectives on history and stories of immigrants in the United States
WHAT: Telephone briefing, including opportunity for questions and answers.
WHY: Two members of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet, Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, will speak on Wednesday morning at the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC. Their stories are those of immigrant Americans. Now, they are in charge of fostering and promoting the welfare of the nation’s labor force, expanding economic growth at home and abroad, and carrying out the decennial 2010 Census count. Together, Secretaries Solis and Locke will work to enact comprehensive immigration reform.
A telephone briefing will follow the live presentations and will involve two additional perspectives on the immigrant experience in America. A union leader and a demographer and researcher both share what history can teach us and what immigrant inclusion means to all Americans.
A question and answer (Q&A) period will follow the prepared statements by Dr. Myers and Mr. Rodriguez.
