CHICO — More than 600 Chico State University students assembled on campus this morning to sign up to do service work in the community, according to Joe Wills, a spokesman for the university.

The community work is one of a number of activities held this week at Chico State to honor Cesar Chavez, the renowned advocate for farm workers.

Saturday is Cesar Chavez Day. Chico State is closed today in observance of the holiday.

From 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday in City Plaza, a program of music, speakers and performances is planned to honor Chavez.
