Chavez honored in Santa Ana
United Farm Workers founder the focus of Chicano pride, say rally organizers.
Santa Ana hosted a march and rally Saturday in honor of the late union organizer and founder of the United Farm Workers of America, Cesar Chavez. Organizers said it was an opportunity to encourage Chicano pride, to underline the principles of nonviolence and solidarity – and to make sure a younger generation knows who Chavez was.
Santa Ana has been paying tribute for eight years now to the man who organized farmworkers behind the cry, "Sí, Se Puede," or "Yes, We Can." The city’s annual celebration precedes Chavez’s birthday and the state holiday in his honor, both on March 31.
Chavez’s granddaughter, Christine Chavez, gave a keynote address by Chavez’s granddaughter, and schools in Santa Ana and Anaheim have also planned assemblies this week in honor of Chavez.
