United Farm Workers plan march for Cesar Chavez
COACHELLA — Activists and residents throughout the valley will honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez with posters and chants on Saturday.
Hundreds are expected to join the United Farm Workers’ organization in a two-mile march calling lawmakers for comprehensive immigration reform, in honor of Cesar Chavez, who died 20 years ago.
The march will start at the Coachella Plaza Shopping Center, at 49647 Highway 86, and will end at Dateland Park.
The rally is part of a series of marches that will be held throughout the country in the next few months, as members of Congress look to fix the country’s troubled immigration system.
“We’re trying to mobilize the Latino community,” said Nancy Oropeza, organizer for the United Farm Workers. “The point is to send a message to President Obama and to all the representatives in the White House. We urge them to pass comprehensive immigration reform for all.”
The Coachella Valley — and in particular the rural areas of the east valley — have close ties to Chavez, as they do to the immigration debate.
According to the Census Bureau, there are at least 276, 464 undocumented immigrants in Riverside County and 39, 946 undocumented immigrants in the Coachella Valley, with the highest concentrations in Cathedral City, Coachella and Indio. Coachella has about 13,000 undocumented immigrants.
“This is a very important pressing matter. It’s an issue that will stabilize their families, their future,” Mayor Eduardo Garcia said about residents hoping for immigration reform.
Garcia, along with the rest of the Coachella City Council, plan to participate in the march.
“We’re participating because it’s important to a community like Coachella that’s made up of several generations of immigrants,” he said. “We want to continue bringing attention and awareness on how important immigration reform is to a community like ours and to the entire nation.”
Assemblyman Victor Manuel Pérez, D-Coachella, and United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez also plan to attend the rally.
