Mission Local (CA): César Chávez Remembered

César Chávez Remembered

Keynote Speaker State Senator Art Torres spoke at the breakfast.

Mayor Ed Lee spoke on what would have been Chávez’s 84th birthday.

At the annual César Chávez Holiday (birthday) Breakfast, held yesterday at the Mission Language and Vocational School, several speakers discussed Chávez and his legacy.

Keynote Speaker Art Torres remembered working and traveling with Chávez in the 1970s. Security for their road trip, he recalled, was provided by two German shepherd dogs named Boycott and Huelga, made unhappy by Chávez’s attempt to turn them vegetarian.

Mayor Ed Lee emphasized Chávez’s efforts to create jobs in San Francisco, particularly the Mission District.

Then a group of students and mentors from the Music National Service — a WPA-style program that seeks to bring music education back into schools, and which just moved its headquarters to the Mission — played a song.

Music National Service students and mentors performed for the large crowd.
