Arturo Rodriguez, Cesar Chavez’s successor, joins L.A. notables in marking UFW founder’s birthday by passing his legacy on to the next generation
Cesar Chavez’s birthday will be observed in East Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 31 as United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez and leading figures from labor, politics and entertainment show how they are helping to pass the famed farm labor leader’s legacy on to a new generation Parents and children will use a news conference at Self-Help Graphics art gallery in East Los Angeles to discuss what they are doing to continue Chavez’s work on what would have been his 72nd birthday. Then they will go door-to-door on nearby streets signing up sponsors for an April 17 walk-a-thon fund raiser scheduled five days before the sixth anniversary of the United Farm Workers founder’s death.
Also among those at the participating at the March 31 birthday event are Paul Chavez, son of the late UFW leader, and his son, Andres; actor Paul Rodriguez and his son Paul, actor Edward James Olmos; actor Ed Begley Jr.; actress Julie Carmen; Assemblymember Marco Firebaugh (D-Los Angeles); Assemblymember Scott Wildman (D-Los Angeles); and Latino artist Ignacio Gomez and his son, Greg and many others.
Following the news conference, both generations of Chavistas will solicit sponsorships in the surrounding neighborhood for the Cesar Chavez walk-a-thon set for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 17. Chavez died on April 23, 1993. The April 17 walk will raise money to continue his work.
