He’s considered an icon in the Latino community – civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. Thursday, Valley students honored his memory.
Students from the Roosevelt School District kicked off festivities in honor of the labor activist.
Local artist Gennaro Garcia unveiled a new mural on the west wall of the Cesar Chavez Community School in Phoenix. The theme of the celebration was "Cesar Chavez’s 10 Core Values."
"He taught us that we can do anything; we can fight and we can get our rights and we can do anything that we want to," said Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.
The event culminated with a parade through town. Some students played in a marching band, while others held signs honoring Chavez and walked alongside city and community leaders.
