KNDO NBC: Mural Honors Activist Cesar Chavez

Mural Honors Activist Cesar Chavez

GRANGER, Wash. — Volunteers gathered in Granger today to paint a mural of Mexican-American labor activist Cesar Chavez.

The mural is being painted on the wall of the Northwest Communities Education Center.

Volunteers and a California artist, originally from Sunnyside, spent the day painting the mural to honor Chavez who played an important role in drawing attention to poor working conditions of migrant farm workers.

Mike Cortez volunteers at the community center, which is also home to KDNA Public Radio.

He said, "We want people to ask ‘who is that?’ We want people who might not have been able to hear about him to maybe get a chance through the mural, to maybe do some research into what he stood up for."

The group has painted similar murals in the area calling attention to other important issues like the dangers of crystal-meth and other drugs.

They are planning to do another mural regarding gun violence after the recent homicide in Granger.
