SALINAS, Calif.- Thousands of people are expected to participate in marches for immigration reform, including in Salinas, to honor the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez on his birthday at the end of the month.

Chavez was the founder of the United Farm Workers of America, which is organizing the events. His birthday is a holiday celebrated in eight states across the nation on March 31st, including California. Chavez died 20 years ago.

Families affected by the current immigration system, farm workers and immigrant advocates will take to the streets on Sunday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning at Cesar Chavez Park, 268 N. Madeira Avenue.

The marches are part of the UFW’s national campaign "Con la Union de Campesinos Tendremos Papeles." A series of events and marches are planned in other California cities, Oregon, Washington, and Washington, D.C. within the next few months.
