Charter School Students March in Honor of Cesar Chavez

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) –

A local elementary school celebrated the life and legacy of farm labor leader and civil rights pioneer Cesar Chavez on Wednesday.

Students at the M.L. Garza Gonzalez Charter School on Greenwood marched in and around campus, holding signs, pictures and flags.

Teachers at the school said that all month, students have been learning what Cesar Chavez accomplished for Hispanics in his lifetime.

"He made the farmers get the right amount of money, because they were being ripped off," third-grader Jaziel Gonzalez said. "Like, they would steal money from them."

"He noticed that women were paid less, so he wanted us to be paid equally," third-grader Lorena Martinez said.

Educators at the school said Wednesday’s event helps students remember and honor the civil rights pioneer.
