UFW protests at Mesa Verde Detention Facility

It’s only been open for about a month, but activists with the United Farm Workers say the new Mesa Verde Detention Center is a symbol of a broken system.

They’ll peacefully protest at 10:30am, Tuesday, May 19th, 2015, outside of the facility in central Bakersfield, calling for reform.

The detention center houses close to 200 foreign nationals who are either waiting deportation, or are appealing the process.

Tuesday morning’s action revolves around republican attacks on President Obama’s new deferred action programs, which have been suspended by state attorney generals.

Protesters will call on Bakersfield Congressman and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to abandon the effort to stop the program for good.

They’ll also be there to ensure detainee’s rights are protected under California’s Trust Act, which places limits on the deportation process.
