Folks hit the streets in north Lubbock Saturday afternoon, to honor civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez. Chavez worked to create better conditions for laborers, co-founding the United Farm Workers Union.

Saturday, organizers celebrated his life and accomplishments with a march from Cavasos Middle School to North University Avenue, where supports also dedicated the new Cesar E. Chavez Drive.

"We’re really excited about this crowd.  There are a lot of youth here, and I think that’s something that Cesar Chavez would be proud of. He wanted to empower the youth, encourage them to get an education. Today we’ll be giving the Spirit of Cesar Chavez Award. We’ll also be giving the award to young individuals and advocates of the youth," Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee Member Christy Martinez-Garcia said.

Saturday marked the ninth year for the Chavez march in Lubbock.
