SALINAS, CA – U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez and Sergio Guzman, United Farm Workers national vice president and treasurer, will be meeting with hundreds of farm workers, new immigrants and community leaders to listen to their testimonies this Sunday, March 17, 2013 between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Hartnell College in Salinas.
The public is invited to attend the event. Farm workers and their families will be sharing their stories with the Congressman and urging him to continue the fight for a new immigration process that includes a roadmap to citizenship for the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
The UFW is currently in negotiations with several major growers associations along with Republican and Democratic lawmakers, to ensure Congress approves the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits and Security Act (AgJOBS). The UFW is also calling on lawmakers to include language that addresses farm workers needs as part of any immigration reform legislation. AgJOBS is a bipartisan approach and supported by agricultural employers, who have worked on this legislation with the UFW for a decade. The bill would give career farm workers presently in the U.S. and who have been contributing to our country the right to earn legal status by continuing to work in agriculture.
The event, sponsored by the UFW, Campesina Radio Network and the UFW Foundation, is part of the UFW’s national campaign "Con la Union de Campesinos Tendremos Papeles." A series of events and marches are also planned in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Washington, D.C. within the next few months.
