House Republicans All Too Happy to Take Anti-Immigrant Votes but Refuse to Fix Broken Immigration System

Immigrant rights advocates meet in Bakersfield to hold mock vote on immigration reform urging Rep. McCarthy to heed the will of his constituents

Bakersfield, CA – The Kern County for Citizenship Coalition and the California Table, a network of more than 64 organizations in California including the United Farm Workers of America and UFW Foundation, will call on Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House Majority Whip, to ‘give us a vote’ on immigration reform now, instead of fueling anti-immigrant sentiments.

Currently, Congress is voting on anti-immigration legislation such as the ‘Enforce the Law Act,’ which calls for the deportation of students and youths, who are currently protected under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and  people, whose family members are currently serving in the military, instead of voting on comprehensive immigration reform. This is at a time when more than two million immigrants have been deported and torn away from their families. Legislation like this one will not fix our broken immigration system.

Congressman McCarthy and the house leadership must ‘Give us a vote now’ on immigration reform with a path to citizenship.
