LOS ANGELES – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, farm workers, and community leaders will call on Governor Brown to sign the the Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Ronald Reagan State Building, 300 South Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90013.
Mayor Villaraigosa will lead a procession with farm workers from City Hall to the Governor’s Office at the Ronald Reagan State Building.
SB 104, the Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act, was passed by both the State Senate and Assembly and currently awaits Governor Brown’s signature. The bill would give farm workers – one of California’s most vulnerable workforces – an alternative to traditional, on-the-job polling place elections to decide on union representation. Under the new process, farm workers would fill out state-issued ballots in privacy. The bill would not end the secret-ballot process but simply give farm laborers a new option to make their voices heard.
