Growing a Spirit For Service Through
Cesar Chavez
By EGP News Report
Three hundred student volunteers pitched in this past Saturday to brighten up Eastmont Intermediate School with 35 new trees, and 100 plants and flowers, as part of a project inspired by civil rights and labor leader Cesar Chavez.
District leaders praised the students for working together and offering up their time to service. “To see our students give back in this way is so inspiring,” said MUSD Board President, Edwin Chau. “Not only are they following the footsteps of UFW leader Cesar Chavez in regard to acts of service, but they are beautifying their school site at the same time.”
“Cesar Chavez was an incredible leader,” said MUSD Interim Superintendent, Robert Henke. “There is no better feeling than to see his spirit in our students today. They truly grasp Cesar’s vision to improve the community, to work together, to organize toward common goals – and they did so with school pride as they helped beautify their campus. It was truly a very proud day at Eastmont Intermediate School.”

Members of Cesar Chavez were on hand to thank the volunteers for their contribution to the community. Chavez’ grandson Arthur Rodriguez, and son Arturo Rodriguez gave keynote speeches. MUSD Board of Education Clerk, Marcella Calderon, also attended to show her support.
Eastmont Intermediate School and the District partnered with the L.A. Conservation Corp, CAL FIRE, the Cesar Chavez Foundation, Bimbo Bakeries Company USA and Starbucks to complete the project.
