College culinary program hosts benefit events
COMMUNITY GARDEN CELEBRATION: A coalition of groups will mark what would have been the 84th birthday of United Farm Workers organizer and leader César Chávez with a Community Garden Day in his honor from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Florida Avenue and 12th Street in Richmond.
The public is invited to join students and residents in maintaining and planting the community garden, taking part in the cultural and educational activities and enjoying the music and other entertainment. There will be food at the free event and books will be given to children who attend.
The inaugural celebration is part of the Nystrom United Revitalization Effort (NURVE) and sponsors include Urban Tilth, Richmond College Prep, Richmond Community Foundation and the Coronado Neighborhood Council.
Supporting the effort are the city, Nystrom Elementary, Leadership High School/LEAP, the Santa Fe, Coronado, and Iron Triangle neighborhoods, Operation Richmond, Providence Baptist Church, Republic Services, Richmond Sanitary and Recyclemore.
Volunteers and crew leaders are needed to make the day a success. Anyone interested in helping should call Richmond College Prep at 510-232-4004.
