The hope is that, even in states where Cesar Chavez Day is not honored, people will be able to join in celebration of a tireless champion for worker rights and hopefully be drawn to learn more about him and the movement to establish a national holiday.

“Cesar Chavez led the historic non-violent movement for farm worker rights and dedicated himself to building a movement of poor working people that extended beyond the fields and into cities and towns across the nation,” says Jocelyn Sherman, a UFW activist. “His words such as, ‘Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures,’ still  resonate today.
