Cesar Chavez inducted into Calif. Hall of Fame; Chavez family, UFW leader joins Gov. Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
Cesar Chavez becomes the second of 13 leaders and legends—after President Ronald Reagan—inducted into the first-ever California Hall of Fame during a ceremony Wednesday evening at its new home in the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts in Sacramento a block from the state Capitol. Joining Gov. Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver at the event will be Chavez family members, including Paul Chavez, Cesar’s son, and United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez.
Once the ceremony gets underway, Gov. Schwarzenegger will officially recognize President Reagan, inducting him into the Hall of Fame. After receiving the Hall of Fame medal from the governor, the late president’s son, Ron Reagan, will then recognize Cesar Chavez. After accepting the medal for his father, Paul Chavez will recognize Clint Eastwood. The program will continue until all 13 inductees are honored. Among t hem are Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart, Billie Jean King, John Muir, Sally Ride and the Hearst and Packard families.
“The Chavez family is grateful Gov. Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver are honoring Cesar Chavez as well as the example of a life dedicated to self-sacrifice and nonviolent social change that is vitally relevant today,” says Paul Chavez, president of the National Farm Workers Service Center Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded by his father that has built thousands of units of affordable housing for farm workers and other Latino working families and operates a popular eight-station educational-format Spanish-language radio network in three states.
Cesar Chavez was described by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy as “one of the heroic figures of our time.” In 1993, the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation was created to educate people about his life and work, and to promote his values and vision.
