The second annual César E. Chávez Week will take place from March 28 to March 31. The event is a collaboration of activities between The César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education, Associated Students, Inc., Los Olivos Commons and University Housing Services.
The celebration will include a film presentation and discussion, blood drive, a silent march and story reading at the Children’s Center.
“This year will be a little different,” Marquez said. “This time we have events that include the current struggles that farm workers are going through. That’s why we have the event ‘Be a Farm Worker for a Day.’”
Participants will be a farm worker for a day and harvest produce in the field behind the Interim Design Center in two-hour shifts. The event will take place March 31.
Gomez said he wants everyone to understand the hardships migrant workers experience in the fields everyday.
“I come from a farm working family, not necessarily here but back in Mexico," Marquez said. "I know the harsh conditions that farm workers are put in. Thanks to César Chávez, we know it’s possible to bring protection to farm-workers and bring awareness to the whole community."
