Hispanics rally for Chavez holiday

About a dozen activists — Hispanic, black and white — gathered Monday at the state capitol to support a national holiday honoring the birthday of labor organizer Cesar Chavez.
Chavez sought better working conditions for migrants as president of United Farm Workers. He was born March 31, 1927 and died in 1993.
Rep. Pedro Marin (D-Duluth) introduced House Resolution 1769 calling for a national holiday for Chavez.
East Cobb mom Blanca Rojas supported the effort.
"Cesar Chavez, to me, is one of the great American heroes," the 39-year-old Rojas said. She used to pick strawberries and tomatoes in east Tennessee and Florida with her family. "My father always spoke of him with a passion," she said. "He presented opportunities for my family — better housing, better wages," Rojas said.
