America’s Voice: Francisco, a Farmworker, Does His Job; Congress, Do Yours

FRANCISCO, A FARMWORKER, DOES HIS JOB; CONGRESS, DO YOURS

Last month, we kicked off the “Do Your Jobs” campaign to remind Congress of all the immigrants who will be working hard to produce our food and drink this holiday season.  Throughout the rest of the year, we will be profiling immigrant workers like Francisco (below), who work every day to contribute to our country.  As Congress heads toward yet another long recess, it’s past time that House Republicans take action, and pass real immigration reform for the 11 million.

Francisco is a farmworker from Porterville, CA. He has been picking oranges in Tulare and Kern County for the past 32 years.

In order for him to complete his job, Francisco must carry a 60-pound ladder from tree to tree and an 80-pound satchel filled with oranges. Whether it’s 100 degrees outside or pouring rain, Francisco continues to work. This is not an easy thing to do, but he does it with great pride. He understands that his work helps feed this nation.

Earlier this year Francisco traveled to Washington, DC, and was arrested during a civil disobedience action in support of immigration reform. “I want immigration reform to pass so that farmworkers don’t have to live in fear anymore. I have seen families torn apart in the fields and this isn’t fair.” Francisco told us. “Farmworkers help feed this nation and all they want is to work to better the lives of their children.”

As the House prepares to work its final 5 days of 2013, it’s important to remember the real people like Francisco who work hard every single day to contribute to a country they consider home. All he wants is for our leaders in Congress to do the same.

Rain or shine, Francisco does his job. Congressman McCarthy, why aren’t you doing yours?

It’s time to give Francisco a vote on immigration reform.
