Oakland students honor Cesar Chavez with garden
OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Students in Oakland commemorated Cesar Chavez Day by beautifying their school. Children at East Oakland Pride Elementary helped shovel dirt into new planters, where they will grow flowers, fruits and vegetables.
Chavez was an activist for farm worker rights and helped them gain better wages and working conditions.
Also on Thursday, President Barack Obama signed a proclamation declaring March 31st Cesar Chavez Day. Of course, California is among 10 states that already commemorate the leader on his birthday.
He would have turned 84 years old on Thursday.
