State-wide coalition members to rally at Rep. McCarthy’s office in effort to pressure the Majority Whip to support immigration reform now

Bakersfield – A day after House Republicans held a closed-door meeting to discuss the fate of the comprehensive immigration reform bill, members of the Kern County Coalition for Citizenship and California Table will rally in Bakersfield in front of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s office at noon in another effort to urge him to support a bill that calls for a path to citizenship.

California Table is a state-wide coalition of more than 56 independent organizations, including faith-based, labor, students, immigrant and civil rights supporters, as well as other allies. Coalition members say McCarthy is one of 15 other Republicans who will be the target of ongoing and increasingly-boisterous actions until they decide to support legislation that calls for a roadmap to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country.

Although the comprehensive immigration reform bill passed the Senate with an overwhelming 68-32 vote last month, partisan politics and procedural obstructions are threatening prospects for a simple vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Immigration reform advocates are calling on Congress to act on behalf of a growing majority of voters by passing a comprehensive solution to fix our broken immigration system – one that raises the quality of jobs for all workers, keeps families together and creates a realistic roadmap for aspiring citizens.
