UFW rallies for Kern County Sheriff Youngblood to comply with undocumented immigrant detention act

The TRUST Act went into affect in Jan. 1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The United Farm Workers, UFW Foundation and Dolores Huerta Foundation called on Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood to follow the law and enforce California’s TRUST Act at a protest Wednesday.

The TRUST Act which local law enforcement officials from detaining undocumented immigrants for federal ICE authorities in minor arrests.

Youngblood and Governor Jerry Brown disagree on the law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Under the Trust Act, illegal immigrants must be charged of a crime to be eligible for a 48-hour hold and possible deportation. Youngblood argues it violates federal law.

"At the end of the day, [police] will place a 48-hour hold on someone and articulate to my staff that if they really want this person, we’re going to hold them," Youngblood said in January.

"Sheriff Youngblood needs to enforce California’s TRUST Act without trying to undermine the new state law by picking and choosing what sections of the law he wants or wishes to implement," said UFW President Arturo S. Rodriguez in a statement about the protest.

At the protest, the UFW Foundation provided "Know Your Rights" information, so community members know what to do and where to call to report any suspected violations of the TRUST Act.
